Run and collect

Kinaesthetic activities are great for getting very young learners interested in learning English, and this game totally incorporates this! Have your learners close their eyes, scatter some items around the room, and then send them moving about the classroom collecting the items. Next, have the learners use the items in a way of your choice, learning vocabulary Counting, teaching plurals, there are numerous things you can practice with this game.

Type: Active game, memory game

Materials: Items to collect (Plastic fruit, vocabulary cards, foam numbers etc).

Language: T: How many? ST: 1, 2, 3.
T: How many apples, ST:4 apples.
T: Give me a banana please, ST: here you are. T: What is it? ST: It’s a banana.

How to play

  • Preparation- Have your learners sit down, and drill the chosen items chorally.
  • Tell leaners to close their eyes, do a mime of your own hands covering your eyes, encourage them to close their eyes.
  • While the learners’ eyes are shut, scatter the chosen items around the classroom.
  • Ask learners to open their eyes, and say ‘go, go, go!’ and encourage the learners to search for the items.
  • Once the learners have recovered the items, ask them to sit down and practice your chosen language point.
  • You can ask learners to count the items, repeat the plural noun form, ask closed questions, it depends on the learners’ level of English.
  • Repeat the game as needed.
