What is it?

What is it?

Hmmm...It could be a bowling ball? Try to guess what the student is drawing. One learner slowly draws an object, and asks the other students what it is. The other students try to guess, first student to guess wins!

Materials: whiteboard, board pens

Language: basic closed questions and modals (It could be a fish, Is it a rabbit?)

Why play this game?

  • Fun
  • Easy for learners to understand
  • Review of important basic forms
  • Good for visual learners

How to play

  • Preparation- Point to objects in the classroom and asking 'what is it?' Students respond with 'It's a [pen, book, window]' etc. Practice the form.
  • Drill the question forms 'What is it?' and ‘Is it a....?' Alternatively drill it ‘It could be a’
  • Demo the game by drawing a circle on the board and asking students what it is. Students answer using 'Is it a....' / it could be a’ and the teacher responds with 'no, it isn't’.
  • Draw two clock hands in the circle, and ask the question. Learners guess that it is a clock, respond with ‘yes, it is’
  • Demo the game once more using a simple item.
  • Give students a few moments to think of an item to draw, and then allow them in turns to draw. The other students use the 'Is it a' or the ‘it could be a’ form to guess the item.
  • After a student guesses the answer, change the drawing student and repeat.
